Bab-e-Sikandari or Sikandari Darwaza

Built as a stand alone structure, the purpose of the gate was to provide privacy to ladies of the household intending to visit the bada talab (upper lake). The zenana quarters of Gohar mahal are very close with no obstruction between this structure and the quarters in those days). In those days, the VIP road didnt exist and if you look carefully they're stairs leading down into what would have been the edge of the upper lake. Bab is the Arabic word for gate. Sikander is of course Alexander the greek conqueror. The second nawab begum of Bhopal took her name after Sikander which has meant (historically) Brave in India.

Another Bab-e-Sikander is located in Sind province, Pakistan.

A short note about this gate:

Built as a stand alone structure, the purpose of the gate was to provide privacy to ladies of the household intending to visit the bada talab (upper lake). The zenana quarters of Gohar mahal are very close with no obstruction between this structure and the quarters in those days). This photo below sourced from this blog show the gate and the zenana of gohar mahal (I couldnt take this shot as it was raining quite a bit). In those days, the VIP road didnt exist and if you look carefully there're stairs leading down into what would have been the edge of the upper lake.

Today, a modern car repair garage exists and Moti Mahal did not exist when this gate was built. The gate has rooms on the upper level and is sizeable in its depth. The parighat masjid (not seen in this photo) is beyond this gate as is Bada Talab (a little bit is seen below).
